Myrtus communis is an evergreen Shrub growing to 4.5 m (14ft) by 3 m (9ft) at a medium rate. It is hardy to zone (UK) 8 and is frost tender. It is in leaf all year, in flower from July to August, and the seeds ripen in October.

Myrtus communis, commonly called myrtle, is a broadleaf evergreen shrub or small tree that is native to the Mediterranean region. It typically grows to 5-6’ tall, but may reach 15-20’ over time. Pointed, opposite (sometimes whorls), ovate to lanceolate, glossy dark green leaves (to 2” long) are strongly aromatic when bruised.

Over 600 names have been proposed in the genus, but nearly all have either been moved to other genera or been regarded as synonyms. The genus Myrtus has three species recognised today: Myrtus communis – Common myrtle; native to the Mediterranean region in southern Europe Myrtus nivellei – Saharan myrtle; native to North Africa Myrtus Myrtle was a favorite garden plant of ancient Rome, where it was sheared regularly to release its fragrant oils. It remains an ideal small hedge plant for city gardens in warmer regions, where it works well in Mediterranean and drought-resistant landscapes. Shear or grow naturally.
